Aperi Village Karpathos: The attractive village of Aperi is situated 8 kilometres north of Pigadia and used to be the capital of Karpathos. It is lying at an altitude of 320 metres, in a green area of one of the slopes of Mount Hamali.
It was choose as a capital when the pirate attacks were ravaging the island, in a spot that was invisible from the sea. The nobles and the cultural growth of Aperi can still be seen today in the beautiful houses built by the wealthy Greek-Americans who return from the US.
The ruins of a castle built in 3000 BC can be seen at Volada, north of the village and the ruins of an ancient temple can be admired before the beach of Ahata. An unpaved road is leading to the pebble beach of Ahata and to the beautiful beaches of Kyra Panagia and Apella (or Ambella). Accommodations, cafes and taverns can be found in Aperi.
